1. Introduction to Certification

With the rapid development of GSM/GPRS communication technology, network operators in North America have put forward higher and higher requirements for GSM/GPRS digital mobile terminals in order to maintain the security of the network and the interests of end users. In March 1997, they joined hands with various terminal manufacturers and third-party GSM terminal testing laboratories to form an alliance called PTCRB, which is specifically for GSM 850/1900 networks and terminals. PTCRB certification is a quasi-mandatory certification performed by a third-party certification body. Although PTCRB is not governmental, all PCS terminal equipment placed in the North American market must be PTCRB certified. The administrative agency for PTCRB certification is CTIA.
